KIRC Hamfest 2003

Ann Arundel/Kent Island RC Hamfest (AARC/KIRC) Kent Island Amateur Radio Club (KIARC) and Anne Arundel Radio Club (AARC)

OL: Grasonville, MD VFW Grounds, US 50/301 East to Exit 44: VFW Ave (past Kent Is. Narrows Bridge
MISSION: A few shots of the hamfest, several of us that collect and operate military radios gathered to show off our equipment to the feather merchants.
Not the biggest hamfest on the East Coast but friendly and lots of stuff.

Norm brought his HMMWV*** for static display

***High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV)

A definite mix of two different technologies. A GRC-9 mounted on the center console of Norm's Humvee. You could hear the 75 meter commo as you walked past the vehicle.
Another shot of the GRC-9, perfect for the 0530 military net held each Saturday here on the East Coast.
N3KCB has obviously found a goodie.

A East coast hamfest would not be complete without Jeff Goldman K3DUA and his G and G Electronics wares.

Norm set up his TBX and Pogo Stick display.

The TBX display was meticulous and very detailed. All important TM's were available as well as photos and history of the "Code Talkers" Defintely a museum quality display.

The wooden "rack" that housed the TBX was constructed using drawings contained in the TM for the radio.   Looks just like Norm's set up.
Norm makes an adjustment on the Pogo Stick.    Norm on the air on 3885 Kcs.
Zorro K4CHE pounds brass using a PRC-70, Mike WB3ILM assists. Note the band around the lower portion of the pants leg. Keeps the wind out when driving the M151A1 "Mutt"in the Danger Zone of 55 MPH.   Another mix of two technologies. A PRC-70 and a BC-611 sitting on the rear facing FAC seat of Zorro's jeep.

Norm opens up his talkie to display his version of a battery box which in this case boasts 11 cells.

A BC-611 link is at the bottom of this page.

A very rare crystal calibrator for the TBX series.
A friendly staff prepared the most important part of a ham fest. Hot Chow.
From L to R, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs. Missing is the scrapple. If you don't know what Scapple is, then don't ask.
The actual TBX unit is in mint condition.

A group picture of the local green radio collectors. From the left we have Norm N3RZU, Tony K3KCB, Zorro K4CHE and Mike WB3ILM. ***

***Missing is Ray KA3EKH, Ray decided to show up for the hamfest on Sunday. The weather was probably a lot nicer on Sunday but no one was there.

Tony snags one on 40 meter cw.
A shot of Norm's battery pack for the PRC-68 series radio. Note the ten cells. What he did what epoxy several packs together.     Get out the epoxy and make your own 10 cell pack.
Norm gives us a nice smile as he departs for the home OL.
